Clinical Care
The UCLA endocrinology fellowship program provides a strong clinical foundation to prepare fellows for a career in both academic and private practice. Patient care at UCLA includes inpatient consult service at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and in outpatient clinics located in the Westwood campus and Santa Monica. The inpatient experience at one of the top medical centers in the nation provides fellows intense training in patient care with unique cases including: pituitary tumors, neuroendocrine tumors, adrenal disorders, and inpatient hyperglycemic service.
The clinical fellowship is completed in two years. Each fellow is assigned to the inpatient service for 2-3 nonconsecutive months per year. The Consult Service generally consists of the fellow, a medical resident, and the consult attending physician. The majority of clinical experience occurs in the outpatient setting, in one of two ambulatory clinics. The main clinic is at the Gonda Diabetes Center, located in the 200 Medical Plaza adjacent to the medical center. There the fellows not only see patients with diabetes, but also patients with other endocrine disorders including thyroid disease, reproductive endocrinology, neuroendocrine tumors, adrenal disorders, and osteoporosis. Fellows and residents have an opportunity to work in our community endocrinology outpatient clinic in Santa Monica with faculty, seeing patients from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and gaining further experience in a wide variety of endocrine disorders.
Fellows gain experience in ultrasound guided fine needle aspirations, with a Thursday afternoon clinic dedicated to performing FNA of patients with thyroid nodules.
